Join us on Youtube for International Literacy Day 2021 on the theme Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide

ILD 2021 will explore how literacy can contribute to building a solid foundation for a human-centred recovery, with a special focus on the interplay of literacy and digital skills required by non-literate youth and adults. It will also explore what makes technology-enabled literacy learning inclusive and meaningful to leave no one behind. By doing so, ILD2021 will be an opportunity to reimagine future literacy teaching and learning, within and beyond the context of the pandemic.

International Literacy Day was founded by proclamation of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in 1966 “to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.” International Literacy Day brings ownership of the challenges of illiteracy back home to local communities where literacy begins, one person at a time.

The JNC-UNESCO Youth Advisory Committee (JYAC) participated in World Mental Day by executing two initiatives in an effort to bring awareness to various mental health issues under the theme “Young people and mental health in a changing world.”

A Twitter forum held in collaboration with Jamaica’s Talk Up Yute and the Jamaica Mental Health Advocacy Network (JAMHAN). The forum was hosted by Emprezz Golding, executive member of JYAC.

The talk invited people to be a part of a discussion which embodied highlighting the issues, putting forward solutions and also to share their respective experiences related to the topic.

The most common issues highlighted by those who participated were depression, anxiety and suicide. Coming out of this discussion multiple people requested the discussions continue beyond the day and hence that served as motivation for the second forum aforementioned.

The second forum was held on October 31, 2018 at the UWI Mona Library Multi-Purpose Room in collaboration with the UWI Mona Guild of Students. The forum was hosted by executive member of JYAC, Mikiela Gonzales.

The speakers included Minister of Health, Dr. Christopher Tufton, Associate Counselling Psychologist and Director of JAMHAN, Jhanille Brooks, Molecular Biology PHD Candidate, Eleanor Terrelonge, Recent Phycology graduate and past UWI Mona Guild Secretary, Kennika Johnson and Monitoring and Evaluation, Processes and Data Quality Assurance Specialist, Derniel O’Connor.

The theme for this forum was Mek Wi Talk! As this platform was intended to not only disseminate information from the diversified panelist but more importantly give the young people a chance to voice their opinions. The main issues posed were those surrounding coping with the stresses of being a university student, the lack of accessibility to affordable counselling, concerns about the government’s stance on addressing mental health issues and also the feasibility of having more support groups across the island.

The two events in total reach over 1000 youths of Jamaica. The energy surrounding the passion these young people have for addressing mental health issues cannot be ignored and the JNC-UNESCO JYAC will continue to support and provide platforms for these young people.

The ACIJ/JMB launched its ICH exhibition during a ceremony at its library in downtown Kingston on February 10. A division of the Institute of Jamaica, the ACIJ/JMB has developed an extensive inventory of ICH in Jamaica, and the exhibition represents its continuing work in documenting and protecting the nation’s local ICH elements.

Examples of Jamaica’s ICH can be found in the beliefs, and practices of folk religions such as Kumina, Rastafari, Revival or in the traditions of storytelling, craft and craft making techniques, songs, proverbs, and cuisine from all ethnic groups.

Speaking at today’s ceremony, Youth and Culture Minister, Hon. Lisa Hanna, said it is vital that the Government, through the exhibition, continues to safeguard Jamaica’s cultural practices and social history. “It was very important to me to make sure that all of us…protect that heritage…because if we don’t register it, and formalise it… 20 years from now, you might not have anything that reminds a young person about what it is,” she said.

The Minister thanked the Japanese Government and Embassy for providing resources to mount the exhibit, as well as funding a series of workshops with representatives of the ethnic and folk communities. The workshops served to strengthen the capacity of the groups to identify and safeguard their own unique ICH elements.
