International Literacy Day, 8 September

JNC-UNESCO cohosted International Literacy Day on 8 September 2022 in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Region 5, and the Jamaica Library Service
This visibility exercise was held at the Church Teachers’ College in Mandeville on the global theme “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces”. It was a hybrid event with 186 persons on the zoom link whilst in- presence participants accounted for over 160 students.
The programme for this activity included
• Greetings by the Secretary General
• Message from D.G of UNESCO on ILD undertaken by Ms Nicole Bella, Education Programme Specialist, UNESCO Caribbean Cluster Office
• Participation by Prof Palmer Adisa (Board member) on video in the panel discussion How can Jamaican Creole impact positively on our learning environment?
It was an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.
Besides the programme of activities JNC-UNESCO
• Hosted a mini exhibition
• Gave away material from UNESCO to the teachers and
• Memorabilia and brochures to the students present.
