The Jamaica National Commission for UNESCO collaborates with other UNESCO Member States and encourages international exchange. In Jamaica, the National Commission ensures that government ministries work to advance the aims UNESCO stands for. In doing this, educational, scientific and cultural activities are promoted in order to advance mutual understanding of all people and develop equity globally.
Communication & Information
Introduction
Through its mandate, UNESCO promotes communication, information and knowledge as driving forces of development and freedom of expression and media as basic human rights.
Secured access to online and offline information empowers communities and gives a voice to the most vulnerable. Simultaneously, the Organization strives to foster independent and pluralistic media by providing direct support and encouraging governments to honor this principle.
Culture
Introduction
UNESCO renowned cultural conventions provide a unique global platform for international cooperation and establish a holistic cultural governance system based on human rights and shared values. These international treaties endeavour to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage including ancient archaeological sites, intangible and underwater heritage, museum collections, oral traditions and other forms of heritage to support creativity, innovation and the emergence of dynamic cultural sectors.
Social Sciences
Introduction
In order to contribute to the development of public policies that will correspond better to changes in society today, UNESCO’s Social and Human Sciences Sector acts as a think tank for the world’s nations, with the aim of associating all those concerned by its actions in their formulation and implementation.

Education is one of UNESCO’s principal fields of activities. Since its creation in 1945, the Organization has worked to improve education worldwide believing it to be key to social and economic development.
The Organization aims to help build a sustainable world with just societies that value knowledge, promote peace, celebrate diversity and defend human rights, achieved by providing Education for All (EFA).
Natural Sciences
Introduction
UNESCO works to advance and promote science in the interests of peace, sustainable development, human security and well-being, in close collaboration with its Member States and a wide variety of partners. It is the only United Nations specialized agency, symbolized by the ‘S’ in the acronym, with a specific mandate for science.
