The secretariat is responsible to the Commission for the effective implementation and coordination of the programmes and activities of UNESCO in Jamaica, and for advising on and implementing policy decisions.
The secretariat prepares and administers the annual budget of expenditure; prepares briefs on the various areas to be covered at the General Conferences of UNESCO; monitors projects; and ensures that reports and invoices are sent to UNESCO at the completion of each project.

Interns
The work of the secretariat is complemented by local and overseas interns. Upon completion of their internship they are awarded certificates of internship signed by the Minister and Secretary-General of the National Commission.
Local Interns
Local work experience students are usually engaged through MCGES/ National Youth Service and HEART/NTA. Local interns are engaged for a maximum period of four weeks.
International Interns
Overseas interns have come mainly from Germany (“Kulturweit” programme) and are interned at our various sister agencies according to interests/qualifications.
